£100m UK Car Collection For Sale

Monday 19th May 2014
With an anticipated value of £100 million and what is thought to be the UK's largest car collection, is being put up for sale by it's owner.
For 35 years James Hull has travelled all over the world to track down the rarest of British cars built from the nineteen thirties to present day. Most of the vehicles that the dentist, entrepreneur and philanthropist purchased have celebrity connections and history; within the collection of 457 classics are Morris Mini Traveler owned by Lord Mountbatten, a Bentley formerly owned by Elton John, Keith Floyd's Morris Minor Traveler, a Jaguar E-type driven by World Motorcycle Champion Mike Hailwood and a car owned by Sir Winston Churchill, complete with a box of touring maps of France reportedly given to the former prime minister by US president Franklin Roosevelt and the Humber owned by Sir Archie Marshall (the judge who presided over the trial of Stephen Ward during the Profumo affair in 1963),
With the inclusion of one of the first E-type roadsters from 1961, a MkX saloon previously owned by Sir William Lyons and a number of ‘pre-Jaguar' SS cars the collection has a prominence of Jaguar cars but is otherwise eclectic featuring a pair of 1954 Bentley Mulliner R Type Continental fastbacks to a Sinclair C5 electric tricycle.
When building the collection Mr Hull did not miss out more everyday cars, he purchased Triumphs, Morris, Mini Coopers, Singers, Rileys, Vauxhalls, Wolseleys, Standards and even a selection of ‘woody' estate cars by Austin and Alvis. He also included a Citroën DS and an Alfa Romeo Montreal. Off-roaders include several Series I Land Rovers and early two-door Range Rovers.

With a collection like this Mr Hull has employed his own team of specialist mechanics with each and every vehicle having gone through complete and extensively researched restorations, typically taking three years per vehicle, to ensure all are original in parts used and specifications.
The UK collection, which is internationally renowned, has lead to cars being leased to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu and the Monaco Motor Museum, and Jaguar has used cars from the Hull collection for its own heritage events and motor show displays.

But the collection is not ‘merely' 457 had picked cars with provenance; it also includes 365 vintage pedal cars, a large selection of working model aircraft and a range of industry memorabilia.
The collection was inspired by memories of Mr Hull's Grandfather's Alvis and his own Father's Jaguar. He is quite determined the collection stays within the UK and remains as complete as possible as he says “each car has its story and all have played a part in the history of British motoring. It is part of our heritage.”
The collection is only now offered for sale as Mr Hull has survived cancer three times in the last four years and he feels now is the right time to pass on that is a large slice of our motoring heritage to a new owner. It is thanks to people like him and his vision that keeps our history alive.
