Montreal Expo 1967 prototype displayed at Auto Moto d'Epoca at Padova

Friday 23rd October 2015
On the Alfa Romeo exhibit at this years Auto Moto d'Epoca in Padova Italy, the historic manufacturer displayed the prototype used at the 1967 Montreal World Expo. Originally fitted with Alfa's 1570cc DOHC, 4 cylinder engine, it's looks captivated the Expo visitors and the press worldwide. It became so inexplicably linked to the Expo that Alfa Romeo decided to call it the 'Alfa Romeo Montreal'.

During the proceeding years the coupé 2 + 2 was developed further and in 1970 was launched with Alfa's legendary Tipo 33 V8 dry sump engine coupled to a 5 speed dog-leg ZF gearbox and limited slip drive chain. The road tuned version of the engine was 2593cc and produced 200bhp at 6500 rpm.

Designed by Bertone, it's looks were truely groundbreaking. Their design gave the look of a mid engined car with it's distnctive but fake side vents. Alfa Romeo went on to produce 3,737 left-hand drive and 180 right-hand drive cars between 1970 and 1977. Cars of this period were affected by the 1973 fuel crisis and with it's V8 engine, the Montreal never sold in the numbers it's design and performance deserved, this is why today great examples are hard to find and a great future investment.
