Having remained in Sweden most of it's life, the previous collector owner discovered the Spider for sale at a large classic car auction in the Netherlands, and after some research he successfully secured the purchase of it. It was duly collected and delivered directly to restorers Mitchell Motors in Salisbury for assessment and colour change from red to Grigio Flemington, a colour that suits the car beautifully. Their inspection revealed what the owner thought, the car was structurally very sound, so the car was fully stripped with doors, boot, bonnet and windscreen removed. It was fully prepared for repainting with particular attention paid to panel fit and shut lines, all of which are therefore perfect on the car today.
Mitchell Motors were founded in 1962 and is today run by the third generation of the same family. To understand more about these artisans and the quality of work 57 years of experience brings click here
During preparation the owner purchased five new Borrani 165x 400 RW3582 alloy rimmed chrome spoked wire wheels shod with period correct Pirelli Cinturato tyres and had them fitted to the car with Borrani's RT52 spinner kits. Particular attention and research were carried out to ensure the perfect offset was achieved, which it was. Whilst the brightwork was removed the opportunity was taken to have it professionally polished to complete the Spider's body overhaul
The car was then sent to General Automobile Services in South Croydon for a thorough mechanical inspection with all issues identified and rectified along with a full lubrication service. The pair of Weber 40DCOE carburettors fitted were overhauled and re jetted after a road-testing to ensure the car starts, drives and performs as it should.
On completion it was noted that whilst the car was reversing it occasionally jumped out of reverse, so it was sent to Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead for overhaul with replacement original reverse idler, mainshaft and layshaft fitted.
This Touring Spider's drive and performance matches it's stunning appearance.
